Most sessions are 50-60 mins. Shorter or longer sessions can be arranged in half-hour intervals.
Counseling is unique to each individual and may vary from a few sessions to a longer-term. The frequency may vary from weekly, bi-weekly to an as-needed basis. As a psychologist, I believe in collaborative practice with the client as an agent for change, and help you make the decision regarding what treatment best fits your unique situation and needs.
My fees are $220/hour which is consistent with the recommended rates for a psychologist in Alberta. I do offer reduced rates for students or individuals experiencing hardship. These are discussions usually had in an initial consultation, but can happen at any point in the therapeutic relationship or as situations change.
I do direct bill to most extended health care providers. It is best that you contact your extended health care provider directly if you have questions regarding your coverage as each individual's coverage may differ depending upon your benefits package and employer benefits.
A psychologist is someone with extensive training and education working with individuals to address social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health issues. A psychologist who has experience working with the issues you are experiencing and who feels like a good fit for you is ideal. If possible, ask for a phone consult when you first make contact with a potential therapist. Ask if this person has experience in helping people to deal with your area of concern. If that goes well, then book a first meeting. Trust your instincts. A therapist understands the importance of relationships and feelings of comfort and safety and supports you in making the right choice for you.
In session, the client will provide their goals for therapy, and together we will devise a treatment plan.
I continually assess for risks to client safety, as well as work to strengthen the client's relationship with themselves and others, and their perceptions of how they see themselves in the world. We work on skills that are in alignment with therapeutic goals, and shift our focus as needed based upon external life events.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialized training in diagnosing mental health issues and can prescribe any medications required for treatment. Some may provide counseling but in my experience and due to shortages, they usually refer patients to psychologists for therapy. A psychologist will have a minimum of a master's degree in counseling or clinical psychology. They have specialized training in diagnosing mental health disorders and in the treatment of social, personal, emotional, behavioral, or relational issues. We utilize a variety of theoretical models dependent upon training, areas of specialization, and interest. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication. A counselor is someone who is trained to provide support, provide resources, listen to you, provide empathy and help you work through personal issues. They can have a certificate, diploma, or advanced degree depending upon their program and interests.
